HISTORIC FOOTBALL PARTNERSHIP SIGNED

BEC-Tero Sasana and Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, leading teams in the Thai and Brazilian premier leagues respectively, have inked a five-year agreement as Official Football Partners.

The historic agreement will see the two clubs exchanging coaching staff, players and knowhow with the aim of further developing the young talent and further building the international profile of both clubs.

As part of the co-operation, Cruzeiro Esporte Clube will send two or three of its most promising young players to train and play with the Fire Dragons in the Thai Premier League.

Furthermore, BEC-Tero junior players will be invited to participate in Cruzeiro’s Under 15 tournament each December.

The two clubs have each enjoyed tremendous success in their national competitions. Each club is the only club to have remained in their respective national competition’s top tier since their inception. BEC-Tero Sasana are two-time national champions and also finished runners up in AFC Champions League in 2003 – the only Thai team to ever reach the AFC Championship final. Cruzeiro have been Brazilian champions on three occasions, and been Minas Gerais premier state league champions an unprecedented36 times.

The two clubs’ partnership comes just as the new Tourism and Sports Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul announced that Thailand should become the number one sports destination in ASEAN.

BEC-Tero Sasana Chairman Brian L. Marcar said, “This is an exciting new development for both clubs and ushers in a new era for player development. It is the intention of forging this Brazil partnership to promote and give our Thai players the opportunity to play football at a high level and learn from a legendary club like Cruzeiro Esporte Clube. That is why, each year, we’ll send our Under 15 team to compete in Brazil offering them invaluable international experience.”

Cruzeiro Esporte Clube President Gilvan de Pinho Tavares added, “Cruzeiro Esporte Clube has enjoyed tremendous success in Brazil for many, many years and we are delighted to now have the opportunity to explore opportunities for the club in other parts of the world. It is a great honour for us to be partnering in Thailand with such an esteemed club as BEC-Tero Sasana.”

About BEC-TERO SASANA FOOTBALL CLUB

BEC-Tero Sasana Football Club was established in 1992. The team was originally known as Sasana Witthaya School and in 1996 Brian L. Marcar purchased the rights to the team renaming it Tero Sasana. Two years later, with the establishment of BEC-Tero, the team became BEC-Tero Sasana and its profile and status within the Thai Premier League really took off.

The club has long been at the forefront of forging successful collaborations with overseas partners and recruiting top foreign players to play for the team. With some judicious player signings and development of its local talent, BEC-Tero Sasana quickly became a mainstay at the top end of the Thai Premier League table.

The club has been Thai Premier League champions on two occasions, winning back-to-back championships in 2000 and 2001, as well as reaching the Asian Cup final in 2000 and the AFC Champions League final in 2003. To this day, BEC-Tero Sasana remains the only Thai team to have reached the AFC Champions League final.

In 2013, the club celebrated its 15th anniversary by renovating a stadium belonging to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and making it their home stadium, calling it the 72-year Anniversary Stadium at Minburi.

Without a doubt, BEC-Tero Sasana is one of the top Thai football clubs of all time. At the 2014 Asian Games to be held in Incheon, South Korea this month, five Fire Dragons players will be playing for the Thailand national team. BEC-Tero Sasana remains one of the leading teams in the modern Thai Premier League and is the only team to have remained in the country’s top-flight football league since its establishment in 1996.
